Hunter S. Thompson Scholarship
Every year Colorado NORML has offered a Scholarship in the name of the great Hunter S. Thompson, celebrated writer and journalist, and was a longtime NORML friend. Thompson first began serving as an Advisory Board Member first joining in 1973, and served until the time of his death in 2005. This scholarship is in honor of him and to celebrate the continous efforts of freedom all people deserve.
This Scholarship is rewarded to those individuals who submit their application and who we feel would benefit most out of this opportunity. We send 2-3 people to Aspen for the NORML Sponsored Legal Conferences every year.
For lawyers from states who require Continuing Legal Education credits, this is a CLE credited 3-day program and non-lawyers are also welcome-- and encouraged-- to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for non-lawyers to meet national legal experts as we work our way from marijuana prohibition to marijuana legalization.
NORML holds the annual Aspen legal seminar usually over the long weekend in June, at the Gant Hotel.
There are always an excellent line-up of speakers, covering a wide array of topics of interest to practicing criminal defense attorneys, as well as those who are now representing the business interests of state-legal marijuana businesses, and advocates.
On Thursday, National NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano usually address the latest science of marijuana; and other intelligent individuals lecture on the latest developments in Intellectual property rights in the legal Marijuana industry; differences from state to state as South Carolina might discuss their efforts to legalize the medical use of marijuana; and Denver discusses the challenges of representing a client in an IRS audit, including form 8300 audits.
On Friday, lectures addressing the issues arising in financing a cannabis business; focus on ways to discredit prosecution witnesses in cannabis cases; provide the basics involved in representing state-legal marijuana businesses; lectures on the lessons learned from handling death penalty cases to court precedents and more are discussed.
And on Saturday, lecture on the use of innocent assets to pay for an appeal; discussions on the ethical considerations when dealing with a difficult clients; discussions on the considerations when representing clients and more.
There are several social events where you can relax and reconnect with old friends and colleagues, and make new friends, in a marijuana-friendly environment. Friday night always has a Benefit and cocktail Party!
As with past legal seminars in Aspen, Chris and Gerry Goldstein will hold a special Friday night NORML benefit party for the attendees at their lovely home in Aspen catered by one the the best Chef's in Aspen.
On Saturday afternoon the seminar attendees are invited to Owl Farm, Hunter S. Thomspon's old homestead, for a cookout and live music as guests of his widow, Anita Thompson. Some years we have been unable to make this happen, and if that happens we enjoy the Hunter S. Thompson Silent Auction and hold event at the Gant!
Hunter, the celebrated writer and journalist, was a longtime NORML friend, Advisory Board member and supporter, who first joined the Advisory Board in 1973, and served until the time of his death in 2005.
We can't wait for HST Every Year!!!
