Colorado NORML’s Comment on the SAM Report
Denver, CO –
Most reasonable observers of the status of life and crime in Colorado post-legalization dispute that legalization has had adverse consequences.
Many of the statistics cited by SAM are outdated and are disputed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and multiple other credible studies. In fact, according to new research published in the “American Journal of Public Health”, marijuana legalization in Colorado led to a “reversal” of opiate overdose deaths in Colorado, a fact which directly contradicts the blatantly false claims of SAM. Many of the conclusions reached also are disputed by Colorado’s governor and attorney general.
This attempt to influence public opinion through false facts and fear mongering by individuals representing a minority of public opinion ignores the racist roots behind the criminalization of marijuana and does not comport with the facts surrounding the benefits of legalization. SAM is out of step with public opinion.
